Biofuel and Biomass Sustainable Auditing and Reporting

Biofuel and biomass supply chains are complex and have a range of environmental impacts. They are often considered carbon neutral due to the carbon produced by burning them has already been offset by the carbon they absorbed during growth.

But that’s only part of the story. They aren’t truly carbon neutral because carbon’s emitted during all production stages:

  • Emissions from the extraction or cultivation of raw materials
  • Annualised emissions from carbon stock changes caused by land-use change
  • Emissions from processing
  • Emissions from transport and distribution
  • Emissions from the fuel in use
  • Emission saving from soil carbon accumulation via improved agricultural management
  • Emission saving from carbon capture and geological storage
  • Emission saving from carbon capture and replacement
  • Emission saving from excess electricity from cogeneration

Buyers and sellers of biofuels and biomass have the right to conduct regular independent audits of its suppliers to ensure that sustainability criteria’s are met e.g. RED and EUD. The sustainability criteria are primarily focused on conservation of biodiversity, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, conservation of carbon, land rights, and socio-economical impacts.

Future Perfect provides sustainability audit and reporting services and global strategic logistics and supply chain advice.
